David Westons paintings
have enjoyed successful showings in both private and public galleries
and are represented in such collections as The Royal Scottish Museum in
Edinburgh, Glasgow City Art Galleries, The National Railway Museum, British
Rail and the National Railway Museum, together with several other national
and provincial public collections. The artists reputation has been
further enhanced by the publication of five books of his transport paintings
and a 3/4 hour documentary by Central TV entitled Beware of Trains
transmitted in their acclaimed series England Their England.
Davids work has featured in many TV programmes over the years, one being a delightful biography made by Anglia TV |
of the artist depicting
his set of paintings commissioned by The Hon Sir William McAlpine on the
History of the British Steam Locomotive, and shown during its four year
tour. That set of paintings brought the artist many rewarding highlights
throughout its public display, but perhaps the most notable has to be
the personal invitation from His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh,
to meet him at Buckingham Palace for an informal discussion about the
paintings and the theme of industry and the arts. Davids professional
career began after a singularly successful exhibition at the British Transport
Museum in 1969 when patrons and fellow artists alike applauded his work.
From that point on he prospered as a |
painter, producing an extremely
varied range of paintings in both oil and watercolour. The key word is
atmosphere, whether an old country house, a rusty old car, boats in an
estuary, or a derelict railway station. His pictures capture the atmosphere
of such experiences as triumph and power, dirt and decay, wet English
summer days, and storm at sea. These effects dominate his pictures and
give them their meaning. David Weston is not primarily an illustrator,
though accuracy is important to that side of his character which produces
the meticulous craftsman. Perhaps because it is atmosphere which is his
primary object, it is the medium of watercolour that he prefers and which
perhaps best captures the talent of this most English of painters.
